New device promises quick testing for food—borne pathogens

SINGAPORE: Health authorities and the food industry can now quickly check for the E. coli strain responsible for the recent severe food poisoning outbreak in Europe.
The recent E. coli outbreak initially blamed Spanish cucumbers and the German sprouts for the Shiga toxin—producing E. coli.
Launched in Singapore on Thursday, VereFoodborne, a Lab—on—Chip application, is able to detect 10 to 12 other food—borne pathogens and differentiate various E. coli strains such as the Shiga toxin—producing E. coli (including E. coli 0157 and E.coli 0104), Salmonella, Listeria and Campylobacter.
The chip features a microarray on the chip, allowing it to detect multiple pathogens in one test, saving time and resources over existing approaches.
Dr Rosemary Tan, Chief Executive Officer of Veredus Laboratories said: "VereFoodborne is already being deployed to several pilot users in Asia and we are anxious to have it protect consumers from food—borne pathogens."
VereFoodborne is a collaboration between Veredus Laboratories and STMicroelectronics.
